Silver Stars auditions this month
Aug 7, 2013, 10:30 a.m.
For the sixth year, Silver Stars is giving talented seniors 60 years and older an opportunity to live their dream. Auditions are scheduled in Memphis on Aug. 24 and 25 at The McWherter Senior Center, 1355 Estate Drive, from noon until 6 p.m.
Ten finalists will compete on Oct. 20 at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium to become the 2013 Silver Star. First ($5,000), second ($2,000) and third ($500) place prizes will be awarded. The fun, family-friendly event is free and open to the public, and celebrity judges and local media will also be on hand.
One of last year’s Memphis finalists, Irving Evans, 85, has been performing for 72 years. He still performs at various senior facilities, including the Memphis Jewish Home every Saturday. Although his son passed away just before last year’s final event, Evans went on to perform at the insistence of his family that includes 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
“In my opinion, I believe that Silver Stars is one of the greatest things that’s available for seniors who perform to have an opportunity to show off their ‘wares,’ so to speak,” said Evans. “Just because we are older, doesn’t mean we are completely out of gas.”
Silver Stars is hosted by Cigna-HealthSpring, a Tennessee-based Medicare Advantage plan. Cigna-HealthSpring started Silver Stars to provide a stage for the many talented seniors in the Tennessee area.
This year, Silver Stars is sponsored by Excelerated Care at St. Francis, Comfort Keepers, EMHC (Emergency Mobile Health Care), Jason’s Deli, The Best Times, YMCA, Harvest Construction, Human Arc and RJ Young.
Auditions will be held in both Memphis and Nashville (August 17 and 18 at The Hotel Preston) and will be limited to the first 150 individuals or groups to register for each location.
Auditions are open to singers, musicians and dancers who are 60 years of age or older by Aug. 17. Participants must register ahead of time for the auditions by either calling or submitting a form online.
