More than 10,000 baby boomers turn 65 every day in the United States, and developers in Shelby County are building to meet the needs of that growing demographic.
At least six senior housing facilities are scheduled to open or begin construction next year. A couple will open as early as January. The new communities will add more than 800 units to the estimated 10,000 units of senior housing in the area.
Nationwide, the average occupancy rate for senior housing in the third quarter of 2012 was 88.8 percent, an increase of 0.2 percentage points over the previous quarter, according to NIC MAP, a data analysis service of the National Investment Center for the Seniors Housing & Care Industry (NIC).
These are the six senior housing facilities:
Culpepper Place of Collierville, 601 Wolf River Boulevard, is a 67-unit assisted care community. There will be 65 one-bedroom units and two two-bedroom units available. Opening is scheduled for the fall of next year.
The Farms at Bailey Station, 276 Grand Center Circle East in Collierville, is a 259-unit retirement community. The units include apartments and garden homes. Medical care will include skilled care, outpatient rehabilitation, assisted living and memory care. Reservations are being taken for new construction, which will begin next year.
Heritage at Irene Woods, 4580 S. Forest Hill-Irene Rd., is a 140-unit (80 independent, 30 assisted, 30 memory) senior living community. Heritage will offer full services, including flexible dining. The facility is scheduled to open in July.
Robinwood, 2795 Kirby-Whitten Rd. in Bartlett, is a 142-unit independent living facility. Robinwood features a concierge, freedom dining with three chef-prepared meals a day and a fitness center. The facility is scheduled to open in January.
